Crest Whitestrips: Nearly Thirty-Two Cycles, Nothing Measured

Crest Whitestrips whiten slowly: one trial needed nearly thirty-two strip cycles to reach a finish line the supervised chair route reached in just over three, and no strip reads the shade you start from.

A Crest strip asks thirty minutes of your evening, then asks again tomorrow, and it never tells you where you are.

One trial whitened thirty-nine people by three routes, each of them to the same six grades of colour. The strips arm needed nearly thirty-two cycles. A take-home tray course needed just over seven, and the chair route needed just over three.[3]

UpWhiten runs Predictive Whitening™ instead. NanoChroma™ reads the shade you are starting from, on an instrument, in the chair, before anyone opens a gel. You are buying a shade, not sessions.

A strip never read you, so it cannot say when you are done. You judge it in a bathroom mirror, buy again in the spring, and the habit runs for years.

Which Crest Whitestrips this page is about

The Crest Whitestrips in the published trials are one name over a changing label.

A 2026 trial of ninety-six people used Crest 3D Whitestrips as its control, worn thirty minutes a day for twenty-eight days.[1] In a 2009 dry-mouth trial the same name meant Crest Whitestrips Premium, worn thirty minutes twice a day for fourteen days.[2]

One trial’s Crest arm carried three percent hydrogen peroxide, the other’s carried ten.[1][2] Neither version read your teeth first, and neither does Crest 3D Whitestrips Professional Effects, sold on the pharmacy shelf today.

What the label and the trials actually support

Cochrane read seventy-one trials and could support one claim.[4] A strip with peroxide in it beats a strip with nothing active in it.

Across those seventy-one trials, the evidence was insufficient to draw reliable conclusions about which home formula is better.[4]

A double-blind trial of seventy-five people put the routes in order. A dentist-supervised tray course changed colour most, then the strip group, then the paint-on pens.[7] That tray is a fortnight of nights; the strips are nearly thirty-two. That paper calls the shop-bought strips significantly less effective than supervised whitening.[7]

How long to leave Crest strips on, and how often

Leave a Crest strip on for the thirty minutes the trials used, once or twice a day, for two to four weeks.[1][2]

In a network analysis of 1,932 people, the retail protocols that moved the shade guide furthest were the ones worn fourteen hours or longer.[5]

One trial swapped the clock for the strength. A high-adhesion strip worn two hours a day beat a stronger marketed strip worn thirty minutes, and the authors credited extending the daily wear time.[8]

The 2026 trial ran its strips once a day for twenty-eight days without a break.[1] In 2009 it was twice a day for fourteen days.[2]

Then the colour comes back and the calendar restarts, for years. A supervised course ends on a reading instead of on an empty packet.

Are Crest whitening strips bad for your teeth?

Crest whitening strips are not gentle on everyone, and nobody looks in your mouth before you start.

“the Crest Whitestrips minus the sensitivity”

— Elizabeth G.

She is asking for a product the pharmacy shelf does not sell. Seven trials pooled 148 users of six-percent strips. Twenty-two percent of them reported oral irritation, and twenty percent reported tooth sensitivity.[6]

In the 2026 trial the branded control arm still had obvious tooth sensitivity after twenty-eight days of daily wear.[1]

At UpWhiten someone looks in your mouth first. GumGuard seals the gum line, PolarGuard runs before and after, and the specialist stops at the first zing.

What a strip costs you, counted honestly

A strip bills you per box, and the label cannot tell you how many boxes.

The Ideal Shade Package is one number for the whole course. It runs as many sessions as your teeth need, until your ideal shade or your genetic limit, at no extra cost. You hear that number at the free Complimentary Shade Consultation, after the reading, and monthly plans carry it.

Your genetic limit is a reading, not a mood. Eighty-five twin pairs on 10% hydrogen peroxide strips showed the yellow the strips removed was highly heritable; how bright the teeth went was not.[9]

The NanoChroma™ scale runs thirty-eight steps, S40 at the most yellow end and S2 at the whitest. The studio’s own records to 12 September 2026 hold a course that travelled twenty-eight of those steps, S34 down to S6.

Those readings come from one visit, and what a whitening visit in Ottawa involves walks you through it.

Two fair points for the strips. They do beat a strip with nothing active in it. In that 2005 trial none of the treated teeth showed detectable enamel surface changes under the microscope.[3] Whitening works on natural tooth only, so a crown, a veneer or a bonded surface keeps the shade it was made in.

The dentist’s chair visit is the opener. The tray is their real product.

What is disclosed about strips, and what is not

Every strip trial names the product and the strength. None of them names the shade you started from, because nobody read it.

The 148-user analysis pooled seven trials run at one dental school, on its own database.[6] In the 2026 trial the Crest strip was the control, and the kinder strip was the one under test.[1]

Cochrane ranked no home formula above another.[4] And a strip that never read you cannot tell you where to stop.

UpWhiten discloses a number, taken twice on one instrument. On the same records that is 1,000+ customers, every one of them here for whitening and nothing else.

Where this page stops

This page stops at one brand. For how strips as a class compare on wear hours and sting, read best whitening strips.

If the question underneath is whether to whiten yourself or be whitened, one supervised visit set against a course of take-home trays carries it from here.

Questions people ask us

I tried Crest strips and they did nothing. Does that mean whitening will not work on me?

It means nobody measured you. A strip takes no reading at either end, so a flat result cannot tell you whether your teeth moved a little or not at all. NanoChroma™ reads your shade before any gel is opened, and again after.

Before you buy a car, you test drive it. Why should I buy before I see a result?

You do not. The Complimentary Shade Consultation is free, and it opens with the reading rather than the sale. Seven in ten buyers decided in the chair, on the day they saw their reading. The Ideal Shade Package then runs unlimited sessions until your ideal shade or your genetic limit.

Are Crest whitening strips bad for your teeth?

What the trials record is irritation, not damage. Seven trials pooled 148 users of six-percent strips. Twenty-two percent reported oral irritation and twenty percent sensitive teeth.[6] Nobody looked in your mouth before you started. In the 2026 trial the branded control arm still had obvious tooth sensitivity after twenty-eight days.[1]

Can I use Crest White Strips with braces or a permanent retainer?

A strip is a flat rectangle over whatever sits in front of it. Brackets, bonded wire and filled edges keep the colour they were made in, so the tooth around them shifts and they stay put. Which of those you have is settled in the chair, before you pay.
