Sensodyne Gentle Whitening: Lifts Film, Not the Colour Inside

Sensodyne's whitening pastes lift surface film and calm a sensitive tooth, while the whole toothpaste category moved colour under two shade-guide tabs and one supervised UpWhiten visit reads your shade on an instrument.

You bought the sensitivity paste because cold water hurt. Then you bought the whitening version, because the tube said white. Those are two different promises, and only one has a trial with your teeth in it. Across three trials and thirteen hundred people, whitening toothpaste as a category moved colour under two shade-guide tabs.[1]

That ceiling belongs to the category, not to one brand. The same pooling put the risk of an adverse effect seventy-four percent above ordinary paste.[2]

At UpWhiten the visit runs on Predictive Whitening™. NanoChroma™ reads your starting shade in the chair, before any gel is opened. You are buying a shade, not sessions.

No tube holds a reading. A paste cannot tell you what shade you started at, so it cannot tell you when to stop buying paste.

Which Sensodyne formula this page reviews, and what is in it

This page reviews the whitening versions of Sensodyne’s sensitivity pastes, by name. Two tubes on the same shelf are not the same paste.

Two studies here name a Sensodyne tube outright. One brushed stained enamel slabs with Sensodyne True White, a sodium tripolyphosphate paste, for thirty thousand cycles in a laboratory.[3] The other made a slurry of Sensodyne Repair & Protect and ran it over root dentine.[4]

Neither is the tube in your bathroom unless the ingredient panel matches. Sensodyne’s actives run across potassium nitrate, stannous fluoride and calcium sodium phosphosilicate. If your tube lists hydroxyapatite, it is carrying a mineral, not a bleach. Read the panel, because the actives change by country and by year.

None of those salts is a bleach. The colour that makes a tooth read as yellow sits under the enamel, and a brush never reaches it.

Does Sensodyne whitening toothpaste work?

Sensodyne whitening toothpaste works on the film sitting on your teeth, and not on the colour underneath it. Take the two apart.

Surface stain first. Half of eighty randomised adults brushed a stannous fluoride whitening paste for six weeks, and the scorers used a stain index, not a shade guide. Their stain scores fell over thirty-five percent from baseline.[5] A stain index is not a shade reading.

Tooth colour second. The whitening pastes did lighten stained enamel slabs in a rig, after thirty thousand brushing cycles.[3] Slabs in a rig, brushed thirty thousand times, and nobody’s mouth runs that protocol.

“I’ve used the whitening toothpaste, but, like, they’re not as effective”

— Elizabeth G.

In people the effect turns up early and leaves. Across a hundred and sixty-one volunteers and eight different tubes, the whitening showed after a short time of use, without a long-lasting impact.[6]

The pastes that carry bleach are not the gentler option. In one laboratory test more peroxide crossed into the pulp chamber than from the ten percent gel a dentist sends home in a tray.[8]

Where the whitening claim and the sensitivity claim part ways

The sensitivity claim on a Sensodyne tube is the tested one, and the whitening claim rides along beside it. They are measured on different instruments.

You feel sensitivity as pain, and you judge it over weeks. An instrument reads colour as a number, in seconds.

That gap is the whole argument for a reading. Across six pooled studies, instrument shade readings were more accurate than a person matching by eye.[10] NanoChroma™ reads your shade at every session.

A dental office reads your shade by eye, then hands you a tray for a fortnight of nights. The studio reads it on an instrument and keeps the work in the chair.

Keep the tube for the job it wins

Keep your Sensodyne for sensitivity, and use it after a whitening session rather than instead of one.

A review of five randomised trials, covering more than three hundred and eighty people, found desensitising toothpaste cut sensitivity after single-session in-office whitening.[7] Here the sensitivity work is PolarGuard, run before and after each round.

The abrasion worry runs the other way from the label. Slabs of root dentine lost no more surface to the whitening version of a Sensodyne paste than to the plain one.[4] A separate study tied the enamel change to the toothpaste itself, independent of the bleaching gel.[9]

Paying once against paying for years

A tube costs you a tube, then the next one, twice a day, for years. That is seven hundred and thirty brushes in a year, with nobody reading the shade at either end.

The studio sells one thing instead of a habit. The Ideal Shade Package is one number for the whole course, with unlimited sessions inside it. You keep going until the reading reaches your ideal shade or your genetic limit, at no extra cost.

The number arrives at the free Complimentary Shade Consultation, after the reading, and monthly payment plans break it up. On the studio’s own records to 12 September 2026, seven in ten buyers decided in the chair, on the day they saw their reading.

NanoChroma™ reads on a scale of thirty-eight steps, S40 at the yellow end and S2 at the white end. All thirty-eight can move. On the same records, one course ran twenty-eight steps on the NanoChroma™ scale, from S34 to S6.

The reading comes first, then the number, and a whitening session in Ottawa is built that way round.

Four routes to the colour of a tooth, and what each is built to move.

Four whitening routes, compared on what they move, how often you pay, and who does the measuring.
RouteWhat it is built to moveHow many times you payWho reads the shade
One studio visit, Predictive Whitening™.The colour held inside the tooth.Once. The Ideal Shade Package covers every session your teeth need.NanoChroma™ reads it before any gel, and again after.

Whitening toothpaste as a category.Under two shade-guide tabs, pooled.[1]Per tube, and again when the colour returns.[6]Nothing is read here either.

An honest word for Sensodyne. If what sits on your teeth is a coffee film, a stannous fluoride paste lifts it, and one trial scored that at six weeks.[5] The trial never named the tube, and a sensitive tooth is real work the tube does. A crown or a veneer keeps the colour it was made in.

What each route measures: a toothpaste trial scores a stain index by eye, a shade guide records one person's opinion, NanoChroma™ reads your tooth in steps What each route actually measures A whitening toothpaste trial A stain index, scored by eye A shade guide held to your face One person's opinion NanoChroma™, in the chair Thirty-eight steps, S40 to S2 Written down before the first round, and after the last.
Two rows end in someone's opinion. The third ends in a number you can read back.

Where this page stops

This page stops at one brand and its whitening versions. Whether whitening suits teeth that already flinch at cold is settled on whitening with sensitive teeth. If the question is which tube to keep, the ranking sits in the guide to pastes for sensitive teeth.

Questions people ask us

Can I use Sensodyne after a whitening session?

Yes, and that is the best use for it. The belief is that a desensitising paste undoes the whitening. It does not. A review of five randomised trials found desensitising toothpaste cut sensitivity after single-session in-office whitening.[7] PolarGuard runs before and after every round here, so the tube is a top-up.

Does Sensodyne whitening damage enamel?

The worry is that the whitening version scrubs harder than the plain one. In the one test that brushed human enamel, thirty thousand cycles with a Sensodyne whitening tube left hardness alone and changed surface roughness within what the authors called acceptable.[3] That is a rig, not a mouth.

I have been told I am not a good candidate. Would this work on me?

That verdict came from a look, with nothing written down, so it never changes. Predictive Whitening™ opens with a NanoChroma™ reading, and the answer arrives as a number before you pay. UpWhiten has seen 1,000+ customers, every one of them here for whitening and nothing else.

Before I buy a package, can I see what it does on my teeth?

Fair, and the reading is the test drive. Your first NanoChroma™ reading happens at the free Complimentary Shade Consultation, before anything is bought. The number for the Ideal Shade Package comes after it, and unlimited sessions sit inside that number, until your ideal shade or your genetic limit.
