Teeth Whitening Aftercare Instructions: No White Diet Needed
Aftercare has four steps: let the colour settle, keep brushing normally, report sensitivity and plan the next reading.
On this page
- What the aftercare list actually asks of you
- What the research says about a white diet
- Eating, drinking and brushing after whitening strips
- How to handle sensitivity after a session
- When to contact the studio, and when a dentist
- What keeps the shade once you leave
- What UpWhiten offers for the next reading
The aftercare list after a supervised session asks four things of you, and a food ban is not one of them. Let the colour settle before you judge it, keep brushing normally, say something at the first zing, and book the next reading.
What the aftercare list actually asks of you
- Let the colour settle before you judge it.
- Keep brushing normally.
- Say something at the first zing.
- Book the next reading.
A Certified Whitening Specialist sets the plan with you before you leave. Keep the instructions for your own appointment, rather than mixing them with directions for a different product.
Wet teeth and dry teeth are not the same colour. In 30 people, half an hour of drying pushed every tooth past the point where a change is visible.[3] Twenty-four hours later, a reading is honest again.[3]
What the research says about a white diet
Seven trials, four of them randomised, had put a white diet against coffee, black tea, cola, grape juice and red wine. The colour change came out the same.[1]
“I’m a daily coffee drinker” — Lorainne G.
One randomised trial of forty-five people split them three ways by diet and by a red wine rinse. The three groups finished with the same measured colour change.[2] The group that did keep off coloured food was the most satisfied at the end.[2]
Pigment still stains teeth over months. Which foods and drinks stain teeth covers that separate question.
Eating, drinking and brushing after whitening strips
You can eat as soon as a strip comes off, water is fine straight away, and you can brush before or after. Those are the existing strip aftercare instructions; the directions for the actual pack still matter.
Across 148 people in seven trials at one dental school, 22% got oral irritation and 20% got sensitive teeth.[6]
How to handle sensitivity after a session
You handle sensitivity after a session by saying so the moment you feel it, and the round stops there.
“when I do the white strips, I find it really sensitive after” — Elizabeth G.
One randomised trial of 75 people set a prefilled tray against an in-office course and the two combined.[5] The in-office technique had the lowest tooth sensitivity, and gum irritation was worse in the tray arms.[5]
In a prospective study of 40 adults, researchers ran six in-office sessions back to back. Sensitivity and gum irritation stayed mild and passed.[4]
If your teeth already sting on cold water, the plan changes before the first round rather than after it. The protocol for teeth that already sting covers that question.
When to contact the studio, and when a dentist
Contact the studio the moment something still hurts a day later, and see a dentist when the problem stopped being colour.
UpWhiten is a studio, not a dental clinic. A pain that wakes you, or a gum that stays raw, belongs with a dentist. The specialist will say so in the chair.
The free one-minute Smile Assessment asks about crowns, bonding, one tooth darker than its neighbours, and sensitivity today.
What keeps the shade once you leave
| Step | What to settle |
|---|---|
| Colour reading | When to return after the colour has settled. |
| Normal brushing | The instructions for your session or your actual strip pack. |
| Sensitivity | Who to contact and which symptoms belong with a dentist. |
| Maintenance | Whether another reading or a future top-up is needed. |
A systematic review of 24 studies of take-home gels found most authors reporting colour stable between one year and two and a half years.[7] A crown or a veneer keeps the colour it was made in. In a cohort of 300 patients, shade kept sliding back across the whole year.[9] These are study follow-ups, rather than an individual promise.
One randomised trial ran two shop-bought systems beside a professionally prescribed gel, and the colour relapse landed on the over-the-counter arms.[8]
What UpWhiten offers for the next reading
Predictive Whitening™ uses NanoChroma™ to read the shade before any gel, and again after it. A visit takes about an hour, on the studio’s own records to 12 September 2026.
The Ideal Shade Package holds unlimited sessions until you reach your ideal shade or your genetic limit, at no extra cost. Dozens of members keep their shade on the separate ForeverGlow membership.
How long a whitening result holds covers longer follow-up. The overview of every whitening method carries the methods and evidence. Whitening visits in the Ottawa studio explains the appointment.
Questions people ask us
How often do I have to keep coming here to do it?
You come back while the readings are still moving, and then you stop. Across 24 studies of take-home gels, most authors reported colour stable between one year and two and a half years.[7] After that, dozens of members keep their shade on the ForeverGlow membership.
So can my insurance cover it?
Most plans file whitening as cosmetic, so count on carrying it yourself. The studio prints the invoice with the procedure wording on it, and you can send that to your insurer. Whatever comes back is a bonus.
Can I drink coffee the day after?
Yes. A network meta-analysis of seven trials found coffee, tea, cola, grape juice and red wine made no measurable difference to the result.[1] Give the colour a day before you judge it, because a tooth that has dried out does not read true.[3]
Will a session sting more than the strips did?
Strips are where most people learned to expect a sting. Across 148 strip users, 22% had oral irritation and 20% had sensitive teeth.[6] In a 75-person trial of three routes, the in-office technique had the lowest tooth sensitivity.[5] A round here stops at the first zing.
