How to Whiten Teeth: One Visit or Nearly Thirty-Two Rounds
One supervised studio visit reached six grades of whitening in just over three rounds, where drugstore strips needed nearly thirty-two cycles of your evenings.

A half-used packet of whitening strips sits in your bathroom drawer, above teeth the colour they were in March. One trial counted the cycles. Three routes ran to six grades of whitening, and the in-office arm needed just over three rounds while whitening strips needed nearly thirty-two.[1]
Who holds the clock separates those routes, and whether anybody wrote down the colour you started at.
UpWhiten runs that visit as Predictive Whitening™. NanoChroma™ reads your starting shade in the chair, before any gel is opened, and the specialist sets your target and your rounds against that reading. You are buying a shade, not sessions.
A drugstore kit skips that step. It cannot tell you the shade you began at, so it cannot tell you when to stop. Your finish line becomes the last strip in the packet.
Which options actually make teeth whiter
Options that make teeth whiter split into two groups. A bleaching gel changes the colour inside the tooth. Everything else polishes the outside of a stain that lives underneath.
Three routes carry a gel strong enough to matter. A supervised studio session, a dentist’s chair visit with a take-home tray, and the drugstore shelf of strips, kits and pens.
In a double-blind trial of seventy-five people, a dentist-supervised gel beat whitening strips, and whitening strips beat paint-on pens.[5] The pens carried the same gel as the strips and still finished last.[5] A strip or a pen never reads your shade, before or after.
“I did the whitening pen, and I tried baking soda Yeah. It don’t work.”

How to whiten teeth at home, and what the shelf really costs
Whitening teeth at home means a weak gel worn for hours, night after night. On the shelf it also means a purchase that repeats.
Fourteen hours of wear is what the winners took. Across 1,932 people, the only shop-bought protocols that came out on top of the network were worn that long.[3] The same authors wrote that people should be warned about the risks of doing this unsupervised.[3]
Cochrane pooled seventy-one trials of home whitening, whether a dentist dispensed it or a shop sold it, and graded the evidence low to very low.[4] No home product beat another.
A strip habit reloads. You buy the next packet in the spring, then the one after that, and the routine runs for years with no reading behind it.
“I’ve used some whitening strips from time time to to time.”
— Gina L.
Do whitening toothpaste and charcoal powder work
Whitening toothpaste and charcoal powder do not bleach a tooth. They polish it.
Pooled across 1,322 people, whitening toothpaste moved teeth under two shade tabs.[6] That is the pooled average of the whole category, bought with two brushes a day, every day.
Charcoal powder and charcoal toothpaste did what plain fluoride toothpaste did, in a randomised trial of fifty-six volunteers.[7] The researchers wrote that charcoal products should be discouraged.[7]
Kitchen remedies are thinner still. The clinical record for oil pulling, pooled in one systematic review, is five trials and 160 people, and it measured plaque, not colour.[10] The rest of the kitchen cupboard is weighed on natural whitening remedies and what the evidence found.
How dentists whiten teeth, and what you take home
A dentist whitens with a chair session and a tray you take home, and the tray is the real product. A guideline built on forty-nine papers sets that protocol at about eight hours a night for about fourteen nights.[2]
That guideline calls the supervised tray the treatment of choice.[2] It is what a dental office can watch, and it is still a fortnight of your nights.
In the trial that timed all three routes, the tray arm took just over seven of those eight-hour nights, inside a fourteen-night prescription.[1]
Someone holds a plastic tab near your face and decides your shade by looking. Across six pooled studies, instrument readings were more accurate than the eye.[9] An opinion decides where a dental whitening starts and stops.
Whitening is a side line in a dental office, sold by the session, with a new quote for the next one. The studio sells one thing. On the studio’s own records to 12 September 2026, 1,000+ people have come here for whitening and nothing else.
What you buy at the studio is the Ideal Shade Package. Sessions run until you reach your ideal shade or your genetic limit, with nothing more to pay. One number covers all of it, and you hear that number at the free Complimentary Shade Consultation, after your reading.
Your teeth decide how many sessions that is. The readings stop moving when the colour left is dentine rather than stain, and that plateau is your genetic limit.
Thirty-eight steps sit between the two ends of the NanoChroma™ scale, S40 the most yellow and S2 the whitest. On the same records, one course crossed twenty-eight of them, S34 down to S6.
How speed and safety trade off
Speed and safety pull the same way here, because the fast route is the supervised one. A trial of sixty people ran an in-office protocol and recorded a perceptible colour change in over 80% of them.[8]
The trial that timed the three routes also checked the enamel. None of the teeth studied showed detectable surface changes under the microscope.[1] Nothing is drilled, scraped or worn away.
Sensitivity is the part you are bracing for. The in-office route had the lowest sensitivity of three techniques.[11] With Predictive Whitening™ that is uncommon, temporary, and gone within hours. We stop at the first zing.
The evidence on enamel and gums sits on what the trials record about whitening safety.
When stain removal is different from bleaching
Stain removal and bleaching are different jobs, and most of the shelf does the first one. A polish lifts what coffee and tea leave on the surface. Bleaching changes the colour of the tooth itself, in the dentine under the enamel.
If your teeth are yellow from the inside, a scrubbing product stops at the wrong layer. A reading settles which job your teeth need, and the stain half is covered on removing yellow stains, cause by cause.
What each route costs you, and who reads the shade
Here is every route on this page, lined up on time, payments and the reading.
| Route | Does it bleach? | Time to your shade | How many times you pay | What happens if you need more | Who reads the shade |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| One studio visit, Predictive Whitening™. | Yes, professional strength, in timed rounds. | About an hour a visit; just over three rounds in the trial.[1] | Once, for the Ideal Shade Package. | Nothing more to pay. | NanoChroma™ reads it before any gel, and again after. |
| A dentist's chair session and take-home tray. | Yes, then about eight hours a night for fourteen nights.[2] | Just over three rounds in the chair, then a fortnight of nights of homework.[1] | Per session, per tray, and the quote arrives after an exam you pay for. | Another session, another quote. | A shade guide, matched by eye. Someone looks and decides. |
| Whitening strips and drugstore kits. | Weakly. Only the fourteen-hour protocols came out on top.[3] | Weeks, months, or even years of evenings. | Per packet, for as long as you keep going. | Another packet. | Nothing is read. You judge it in the mirror. |
| Whitening toothpaste and charcoal powder. | No, it polishes the surface. | Under two shade tabs on average.[6] | Per tube, twice a day, for life. | Another tube. | Nothing changed, so nothing is read. |
| Kitchen remedies, oil and baking soda. | No. | A daily routine with no end date. | Cheap, and repeated forever. | Another morning. | Nobody has looked in your mouth. |
Two limits belong here. Whitening lifts natural tooth colour only, so a crown, a veneer or a bonded front surface keeps the colour it was made in. A stain set deep inside a tooth by an old injury behaves the same way. Coffee reloads the colour on every route.
How to choose your next step
Choosing your next step is a question about your own teeth, and it takes a reading rather than a shelf. Three things settle it. Whether anything in your smile line is crowned, bonded or capped, whether one tooth sits darker than its neighbours, and whether your teeth sting today.
A one-minute check on whether whitening suits your teeth answers all three. On the same records, seven in ten buyers decided in the chair, on the day they saw their reading.
The Ottawa studio’s whitening sessions and how a visit is arranged covers the practical end of the supervised route.

Questions people ask us
I've tried all the toothpaste in the world. Why would a visit land anywhere else?
A tube was never aimed at the colour inside the tooth. Across 1,322 people, whitening toothpaste moved teeth under two shade tabs.[6] A studio round holds professional strength on the tooth, and NanoChroma™ reads the shade before and after, so you leave with a number.
Other dentists have told me I cannot expect a good result. Should I even try?
That verdict came from a look, not a reading. Across six pooled studies, instrument readings were more accurate than the eye at matching a shade.[9] NanoChroma™ writes down where you are starting before you spend anything, and the specialist checks in the same visit what is crowned or bonded.
How can I get my teeth white fast without leaving the house?
Fast and unsupervised do not sit together on the evidence. Pooled across 1,932 people, the only shop-bought protocols that came out on top were worn fourteen hours or longer.[3] Those authors warned about doing it unsupervised.[3] A studio visit takes about an hour, and a specialist reads your shade before and after it.
I want to see what my own teeth do before I commit to anything.
That is the right instinct, and the reading is where it happens. Your first NanoChroma™ reading comes at the free Complimentary Shade Consultation, ahead of any package. The Ideal Shade Package then runs unlimited sessions until your ideal shade or your genetic limit, so slower teeth cost nothing more.
